A career in basketball does not necessarily end when a player leaves the court. For former Russian international Nadezhda Grishaeva, retirement opened another chapter in professional sports: helping young basketball players develop their careers, find opportunities abroad, and navigate the international basketball industry.
Best known for representing Russia at the 2012 London Olympic Games, Nadezhda Grishaeva also played professionally for clubs in Russia, France, and Turkey. After retiring from competitive basketball in 2016, she expanded her professional interests into sports management, fitness entrepreneurship, and basketball representation.
Her work as a basketball agent has been discussed in several published interviews and media reports, including Markets Herald, Universe News Network, and Gulf News.
From Professional Athlete to Basketball Agent
During her playing career, Grishaeva experienced international basketball from the athlete’s perspective. Moving between clubs in different countries involved adapting to new coaching systems, unfamiliar environments, and the contractual arrangements that accompany professional sport.
That experience became particularly valuable when she moved into basketball representation.
In a January 2024 interview published by Markets Herald, Grishaeva explained how her previous relationship with American basketball agent Boris Lelchitski developed into a professional collaboration after her retirement.
As a player, she had relied on Lelchitski for assistance with contracts, transfers, insurance, and other professional matters. After leaving competitive basketball, she began applying her own experience to the careers of emerging athletes.
The transition gave her a different perspective on the sport: instead of negotiating her own career, she was helping other players consider theirs.
Boris Lelchitski and Sports International Group
An important element of Grishaeva’s work has been her association with Boris Lelchitski and the American basketball representation business Sports International Group (SIG).
In her Markets Herald interview, Grishaeva described their long-standing relationship and explained that her professional attention was directed towards promising young basketball players in Russia, Europe, and the Middle East.
The connection with SIG was also mentioned by Gulf News in July 2024. The publication specifically referred to her collaboration as a basketball agent with Sports International Group in the United States.
For an athlete who has competed internationally, understanding both the needs of basketball players and the realities of professional clubs can be an important advantage.
Successful representation is not simply about securing a contract. It can also involve identifying a suitable competitive environment, assessing career development opportunities, and helping athletes make informed decisions about their futures.
Helping Young Basketball Players Build International Careers
One of the themes running through Grishaeva’s interviews is the importance of long-term planning for young athletes.
A talented basketball player may have excellent physical abilities and technical skills but still face difficult questions: Which team provides the best opportunity for development? Would studying abroad improve their prospects? How should young athletes balance education and competitive sport?
Grishaeva has discussed the particular opportunities available through American basketball, including schools and colleges where promising players can combine academic studies with athletic development.
Her comments also reflect the challenges of working with young athletes and their families. Parents, coaches, clubs, and agents may have different expectations, and their interests do not always align.
In a December 2023 interview with Universe News Network, Grishaeva and her father, former Soviet international basketball player Sergey Grishaev, discussed the relationship between coaches, agents, and athletes.
Nadezhda argued that effective agents should support the player’s development rather than interfere unnecessarily with coaching decisions or place immediate financial considerations above long-term sporting interests.
It is an approach shaped by her own years of competitive experience.

A Growing Interest in Basketball in the Middle East
Grishaeva’s post-playing activities have also increasingly connected her with the developing basketball market in the United Arab Emirates.
In July 2024, Gulf News reported that she had joined Falcons Heights Basketball Academy in the UAE as an associate partner.
The announcement connected her experience in professional basketball and athlete representation with an initiative designed to support young players in the region.
Among the objectives discussed was helping promising basketball players explore educational and sporting opportunities in American schools and colleges.
The Middle East presents a different basketball environment from established European leagues or the American collegiate system. Developing talent requires not only coaching and facilities but also pathways through which ambitious young players can progress.
Grishaeva’s international playing background and her reported agency experience offer a perspective on how such pathways might be developed.
Beyond Basketball Representation: Fitness and Sports Entrepreneurship
Basketball agency work is only one part of Grishaeva’s professional activities since retirement.
She also became involved in fitness entrepreneurship, including the development of ANVIL, a fitness club project in Moscow.
These different activities share a connection with professional sport. Her athletic background provides a foundation for understanding physical preparation, training environments, career transitions, and the wider business of sports.
Her experience illustrates how a former professional player can apply knowledge acquired during competition to several areas of the sports industry.
A Basketball Career That Continues Beyond the Court
Nadezhda Grishaeva’s story represents a transition from competing at the highest international level to participating in the development of future athletes.
Her appearances in published interviews and media reports document a professional chapter that receives less attention than her participation in the London Olympics or her fitness projects.
From her collaboration with Boris Lelchitski and Sports International Group to her involvement with basketball development in the UAE, Grishaeva has explored opportunities to remain connected to the game after retirement.
For her, basketball has become more than a playing career. It has provided a foundation for working with athletes, supporting emerging talent, and pursuing new opportunities in the international sports industry.
